New Stargate SG-1 Children of the Gods Final Cut

The new Stargate SG-1 Children of the Gods - Final Cut was released this summer and none too soon for my worn out dvd needs replacing.

The edits of the updated version enhance the CGI and remove the nudity geared originally for the cable paying-customer. Since none of the subsequent episodes followed with such explicit scenes, it now matches the rest of the ten seasons and palatable for family viewing.

Tbe closed captioning upgrade enables the aging hearing impaired public to follow the dialog.

Stargate Universe, with its steamier episodes, appears to be reintroducing some of the sensuality in SG-1's pilot. Striving to reach that young adult audience, SGU focuses on the developing passion between Chloe Armstrong (Levesque) and Matthew Scott (Smith) very blatantly in the episode "Light." The producers referr to the 'more mature' subject matter.

More to come.

Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe's fifth episode, "Light" will air on Syfy this Friday at 9/8c (ch131.com and hulu.com upload within hours following)and we're in for some feverish play hinted at since the pilot.

Anticipate the budding romance between First Lieutenant Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith) and the Harvard educated aide, Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque), to provide an entanglement not allowed in the others.

Unlike the past series where the unrealized passion between Carter and O'Neill (people in a military chain of command are not supposed to have relationships) or Elizabeth Weir and all possible men under her command, SG-U offers the possibility of burgeoning relationships between the civilian and military mix in their happenstance existence.

Half the residents of Destiny had not chosen the profession of universe hopping, planet exploring or space ship traveling. I expect we'll see a microcosm of life on earth with the disperate passengers on this journey to the unexpected, since they cannot choose their destinations on the programmed starship.

What are your favorite episodes of any sf show?

My all time favorite Stargate SG-1 is 'Window of Opportunity' a Groundhog Day version of the show. Repeating a day over and over becomes increasingly hysterical as Colonel O'Neill(Richard Dean Anderson) and Teal'c (Christopher Judge) study the ancient language and translate the pages for anthropologist and linguist, Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), to interpret how to end the 1/2 day time/space loop and live in a world without consequences.

From the monotonous breakfast with the question Jackson asked Jack, who wasn't paying attention, and Teal'c's nose-smashed-by-door moment to golfing through the Stargate for the longest drive on record and of course, the 'kiss' between love-denied Dr. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and O'Neill (RDA), this cleverly constructed show brings the believable Robin Mossley to another of his many incarnations in Science Fiction television and creates one of televisions most beloved episodes (#6) in Season Four.

What's in a name? Window of Opportunity provides pathos and humor, unrequited love realized, sorrow over death juxtaposed with joy over love, O'Neill's penchant for desiring 'short explanations' because the details are wasted on him as well as the juggling Teal'c and Jack do while Jackson races to solve the problem are the exquisite mix in this episodic drama/comedy/sf/action/adventure show.

In short, it has everything. Well done, to director, Peter DeLuise and of course, writers, Paul Mullie and Joseph Mallozzi; developers, Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, whose united vision personified all of the best of Stargate.

The new series, Stargate Universe, with an ensemble cast debuted on the Syfy channel on October 2, 2009. Brad Wright’s knowledge of science adds texture to the new series. Aiming for a darker, more mature theme than its predecessors, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, SGU’s somber atmosphere threatens the diversity of characters. The mysterious premise lacks the humor that leads, Richard Dean Anderson brought to the original series (SG-1) in the Colonel Jack O’Neill character or the John Shepherd character played by Joe Flannigan.

A motley group of earthlings from several countries evacuate a planet where the ninth Stargate chevron is discovered. The wily ‘mad’ scientist dials an address against orders and plops this diverse group (who are rushing through as their base is obliterated) in a gloomy, damaged ancient ship called Destiny. It suffers from deterioration and non-functioning services such as their life support, in particular, air supply. The first order of business, as the tagline says, ‘Their only mission survival.” A series of mistakes and misadventures careen us through their precarious existence with the life and death threat dangling overhead. It is no surprise that the lead scientist, Dr. Rush, played by veteran actor, Robert Carlyle suffers a nervous breakdown. Stay tuned for more.

Stargate Series

The premise of any Stargate series is that a large double-ring made of a material alien to earth was found in Geza in 1928. After being studied over the next seventy odd years an anthropologist and team of U.S. Air Force scientists interpreted the symbols to represent locations around the universe.

Initially requiring six symbols to determine the destination combined with a seventh as the point of origin, the dialing allowed instantaneous transportation to planets, moons and ships around the galaxy through the use of a DHD (dial home device) or a Gerry-rigged computer by the brilliant physicist, Dr. Samantha Carter. Discovering an eighth symbol expanded it to neighboring galaxies because the eighth functioned as an area code. Every gate has the circle and the internal rotating ring that locks on the locations in sequence and produces, as Colonel Jack O’Neill described it, ‘a sideways-flushing toilet’ vortex that settles into an event horizon (a shimmering watery-appearing plane) through which one steps into worlds full of crises and excitement.

These ‘stargates’ were created by an alien race, referred to as the Ancients, or Asurans, who now have become ascended beings who refrain from assisting the intrepid and often floundering explorers.

The series are the brain childs of Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner when they sought the rights to the original movie, Stargate. Joseph Mallozi and Paul Mullie came on board to help produce. Richard Dean Anderson's role from the start was a huge draw as an executive producer and lead in the SG-1 series.
