Stargate Universe

The new series, Stargate Universe, with an ensemble cast debuted on the Syfy channel on October 2, 2009. Brad Wright’s knowledge of science adds texture to the new series. Aiming for a darker, more mature theme than its predecessors, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, SGU’s somber atmosphere threatens the diversity of characters. The mysterious premise lacks the humor that leads, Richard Dean Anderson brought to the original series (SG-1) in the Colonel Jack O’Neill character or the John Shepherd character played by Joe Flannigan.

A motley group of earthlings from several countries evacuate a planet where the ninth Stargate chevron is discovered. The wily ‘mad’ scientist dials an address against orders and plops this diverse group (who are rushing through as their base is obliterated) in a gloomy, damaged ancient ship called Destiny. It suffers from deterioration and non-functioning services such as their life support, in particular, air supply. The first order of business, as the tagline says, ‘Their only mission survival.” A series of mistakes and misadventures careen us through their precarious existence with the life and death threat dangling overhead. It is no surprise that the lead scientist, Dr. Rush, played by veteran actor, Robert Carlyle suffers a nervous breakdown. Stay tuned for more.
